Speaker Biography
Wendy Jarnet
RVNS, BVN, VTS (SAIM), Dip. FN (ISFM), GDTE GCertBusv

Wendy Jarnet is a Registered Veterinary Nurse Specialist and Veterinary Technician Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She is the creator of The Free-range Vet Nurse, a Senior Lecturer at Otago Polytech in the School of Animal Health, an executive committee member for the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA), and a trust board member for Healthy Pets New Zealand.
Since beginning her career in 2008, Wendy has worked in various roles, including veterinary receptionist, head veterinary nurse, lead consulting nurse, clinical coach, large animal vet tech, and specialist veterinary nurse. She has gained diverse experience in companion animal first opinion practices, mixed practice, emergency vet hospitals, and specialist referral hospitals across New Zealand. Wendy has also volunteered for desexing charities in NZ and at Te Aru Manu vet clinic in Rarotonga. In 2015, she was awarded New Zealand Vet Nurse of the Year. Wendy has also contributed to the veterinary nursing literature, with published articles in both the NZ Vet Nursing Journal and the UK Vet Nurse journal.
Wendy holds a VTS in Small Animal Internal Medicine from the Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians in the USA, a Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing, a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education, a Graduate Certificate in Business, a Certificate in Rural Animal Technology, and a Diploma in Feline Nursing from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). She is also RECOVER CPR Certified.
She has shared her knowledge at several conferences, including the NZVNA conference in 2019, where her presentation on “Anxiety and the Vet Nurse” was voted the “favourite session”. During the pandemic in 2020, she facilitated online webinars with the NZVNA to ensure access to continuous professional development for allied veterinary professionals.
Wendy actively keeps up to date with innovative approaches to improving the veterinary profession, staying informed and enthusiastic about new research, particularly in internal medicine, oncology, low stress handling and vet nursing consults. She applies this knowledge in her work and presentations to vets and nurses.
Outside of work, Wendy is a martial arts instructor. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and exploring new places.
